This presentation outlines UAE’s Civil Defense experience on improving the efficiency of its firefighting crews emergencies response. This involved the development of two new definitions of civil defense emergency response, i.e. response time and total response time and related components. Both are currently being implemented on a state level. In addition to this, seven new key standards to raise the efficiency of the internal security system and include:
- The CD’s firefighting crews (FS) area boundaries to reinforce the coverage response and distribution
- CD’s firefighting crews types
- Center requirements for response
- Raising the efficiency of HR and allocation of technical support equipment
- Identifying the CD’s incident command responsibility
- Achieving the concept of command and control
Following the awful Grenfell Tower fire in west London on 14th June 2017, the UK government have been working closely with industry experts to review the Building Regulations and the design, construction, and management of high-risk buildings. This presentation will give a summary of the findings from the investigation and the many industry workshops held to uncover the causes of how the Grenfell Tower fire spread. What actions have the UK authorities taken alongside industry stakeholders to try and prevent future tragedies. Secondly, the presentation will give an update on the ongoing work on the international movement to develop consistent fire safety standards globally for high-risk buildings.
Exponentially increasing computer power and advances in software make it possible to radically improve fire safety in buildings by visualizing and factoring in human behavior during a building evacuation. This presentation gives an overview of technologies currently in used and developed for building design and how this benefits safety.

The presenter discusses holistic fire safety design, with particular emphasis on sustainable design by integration of operational and end user requirements into the fire strategy design process. All too often designs are purely driven to satisfy code requirements or to obtain approval and ultimately may not meet operator or end user requirements. Many new technologies are now available to support operators manage fire safety in their buildings which can be considered during the design process.
The launching of a new operational facility involves complex interactions of people, process, technology and environment - the presenter gives an outline of the technology that can facilitate a greater level of fire safety awareness and implementation.
